Tour the Islands
The Huron National Wildlife Refuge, located three miles off Michigan's Upper Peninsula in Lake Superior, consists of eight rocky islands established as a federal bird sanctuary in 1905 to protect nesting herring gulls. Known for the 1868 Huron Island Lighthouse on Lighthouse Island, the site was created to improve safety for shipping after the 1860 Arctic shipwreck.
